Alpine High School’s Reunion of the Sixties was a rollicking success July 4th weekend. Nearly 500 rapidly-aging boomers and a dozen faculty and staff from the 60s descended on the community Friday evening with registration at the Outback. On Saturday more registration in the old high school hallway and presentation of a memorial in the auditorium. Saturday evening we gobbled barbecue and danced the chicken at Our Lady of Peace Parish Patio. Some brave souls hit the links at the Alpine Country Club for a golf tournament Sunday morning while the rest of us compared grandkids and health ailments. On Monday, true teens of the 60s climbed aboard a trailer in the parade and finished off with a fish fry and fireworks at Kokernot Lodge.
You might have seen these reuniters about – they were the one’s wearing T shirts, caps and photo IDs to remind them of who they were (and are). Presumably they knew where they came from, as somehow they got back here. Some came long distances, such a Claude Guillemet from France who was an exchange student in 1964. Some just walked out their front door to celebrate with “pals, buds, and partners in crime.”
All are thankful, and it’s a good thing, as they have a lot of people to thank. KVLF/KALP and the Big Bend Sentinel for promotions and free publicity. The Chamber of Commerce. The Outback. Shotgun Grill for the welcome sign and fish fry. Paul Pasqua for barbecue. True Value for another sign. Sul Ross and Our Lady of Peace. Alpine businesses for 37 door prizes. AISD for gracious loan of the old building and recognition of the reunion. West Texas National Bank and our underwriters (you know who you are). And finally, our big/little sisters/brothers from the 50s and 70s who helped out. Thanks Alpine!
